Where do the heights come from?
From free public elevation data (Mapzen Terrain Tiles on AWS). Only the coordinates are sent to download them.
Why use the height boost?
Real landscapes are flatter than people expect. A boost of 1.5–3× makes hills and valleys easier to see.
